The legal representative of the 15 students from the University of the Free State (UFS), in Bloemfontein, who were arrested on Wednesday for public violence and failure to adhere to the university court order, have been released without appearing in court.

The 11 females and four male students were expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court today.

However, their legal representative, Advocate Thabo Pela says after discussions with the court it was decided the university never read out the court order to the students and no register was taken of the court order.

Pela says the matter has now been removed from the court roll. He says the students were arrested for raising issues relating to their NSFAS funding.

Pela says the arrests of the student was unlawful.
