Rescue operations remain on hold at Roodepoort mine

Johannesburg Emergency Services says the mine rescue operations are still on hold at the Rand Lease abandoned mine in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg.

It is believed that at least two people have been trapped since the weekend – with emergency services attending to the call in the early hours of Sunday morning.

On Monday the rescue operations had to be halted due to safety reasons.

VIDEO| Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, says the rescue operation is risky and needs a proper plan:

City of Johannesburg emergency services requested assistance from the Department of Mineral Resources after they struggled to make it down the shaft on Sunday.

With more expertise and more advanced equipment, the trapped minors could not be brought to the surface due to safety reasons, forcing the mine rescue team to halt operations.

With no screams from the abandoned shaft, it remains unclear if those trapped are still alive.

Meanwhile, Emergency services are still waiting for an update from the Department of Mineral Resources, and the police, before they can go back to the mine.
