Mbeki questions soured Republican relations with SA

Former President Thabo Mbeki has defended South Africa’s position against the United States (US).

This after US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order cutting off aid to South Africa following the enactment of the Expropriation Act.

President Cyril Ramaphosa responded by saying South Africa is a sovereign country that can have its own rules and regulations. In an exclusive interview with the SABC, Mbeki says Trump took a decision without consulting with Pretoria.

He further says South Africa has been having good relations with Republicans in the US.

“I honestly don’t understand it. I agree with the position our government has taken that it should directly engage the Trump administration. I think that is very correct may be in that engagement will come to know what happened what has changed. It is a radical change completely out of the blue with regard to behaviour of the Republican party in the US towards us. It’s a radical change overnight.”
