Four people arrested for water infrastructure vandalism in E. Cape

Four people have been arrested in connection with water infrastructure vandalism at Chris Hani district municipality in Eastern Cape.

The arrests are linked to disruptions in water services provision and the vandalism of newly installed water tanks in Ezibeleni.

These tanks were part of the district’s intervention to supplement water supply in the area, which is currently experiencing shortages.

This is due to Bonkolo Dam’s water levels remaining below the abstraction point.

Municipal spokesperson Bulelwa Ganyaza says the municipality has welcomed the arrest, “The four suspects it is alleged that they were disrupting our water cuts and denying municipal drivers who were assigned to distribute water in the Unathi Mkefa area. As the district municipality, we do commend the collaborative efforts and swift action by our community and members of SAPS as these are some of the incidents that we are confronted with within our area and most of them are reported and there is no information that leads to any arrest, so this is a breakthrough.”
