Housing development.
Western Cape Infrastructure Minister Tertius Simmers has revealed that the province’s housing backlog has reached approximately 620 000 units, with the majority of the demand concentrated in Cape Town.
Simmers emphasized the importance of partnerships with the private sector to accelerate housing projects.
Speaking during a visit to a housing project in Macassar near Somerset West yesterday, Simmers said: “As of December, our backlog actually crossed the 620 000 mark, the bulk of which is in the City of Cape Town. Projects such as these show our commitment. But ultimately, it also speaks to the new reality which, as the infrastructure sector, we must focus on through new settlements. So, how do we partner with the private sector? Just across the road from the Macassar project is a private development that progressed much quicker on scale.”
