The report on the George building collapse will not be made public at this stage, according to the Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers.

On Thursday, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde handed over the report to provincial Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile.

Thirty-four people were killed and several others injured when the apartment building which was under construction collapsed on May 6 last year.

Twenty-eight people were rescued alive.

A day after the tragedy, the Western Cape government started an investigation with the assistance of an independent structural engineering firm.

Simmers says due to the possibility of criminal proceedings, the report will not be made public yet.

“The Premier formally handed over the V3 engineering report which was also peer reviewed to ensure that it does stand the test of scrutiny in the next process which is the investigation of the police. The report is now handed to the police, the process of the law they will initiate in terms of their own investigation which this report will seek to assist and aid, given the technical nature of the investigation that is required.”
