Police seen at Shaft 11 in Stilfontein, North West.
Police say they will not be deterred in their efforts to find the so-called Stilfontein illegal mining kingpin Neo Tshoaeli, popularly known as Tiger.
Though he emerged with other illegal miners from underground during the government-led retrieval operation, it is reported that he never made it to police cells.
Police suspect he was aided by some of their members.
As a result, four officers, Jack Motlhabya, Menzi Shabalala, Ntutuko Dladla and Samkelo Mbotho, were arrested.
VIDEO | North West Acting Police Commissioner Patrick Asaneng says it was only when suspects were supposed to appear in court that they realised that Tiger was nowhere to be found.
The four appeared before the Stilfontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday and released on R1 000 bail each.
In responding to the SABC’s inquiry on whether reports of Tshoaeli’s death were true, police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe says their focus is on finding Tshoaeli.
“Our focus now is where is the fugitive, where was he taken to. He must be found. Everything that has to do with the matter must be investigated thoroughly. Premafacie evidence indicates that our own were involved. Now, we must move to what really transpired. “
