Vice-Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg Letlhokwa Mpedi says they have received over 600 000 applications for the 2025 academic year.
However, the institution can only accommodate 10 000 prospective students.
Over 300 000 matriculants achieved Bachelor passes.
But institutions of higher learning are facing pressure to accommodate an influx of new students.
Mpedi is pleading with the public to understand that they have enrolment plans.
“The public must understand one thing that as public universities, we have enrolment plans which are agreements that universities have with the Department of Higher Education and Training. So, if we go over allocated code, then there are serious penalties. So unfortunately, we cannot go over our enrolment target.”
