Mpumalanga transport officials inspect burnt out Putco buses.
Mpumalanga police say they’re following up all possible leads to find and arrest the other suspects believed to be connected to the torching of 51 Putco buses, in the Nkangala district on Monday night.
This follows the arrest of two suspects, aged 29 and 37, on Tuesday night after a co-ordinated effort by the provincial team.
According to the bus company, the damage to its property is estimated at R250 million.
Brigadier Donald Mdhluli says, “During the arrest one of the suspects was found in possession of a mobile phone belonging to one of the victims as well as as a magazine for a 9mm pistol.”
Though buses are running.
Commuters have expressed concern.
The bus company says the R250 million damage includes the smart tab system and surveillance cameras which were fitted in the buses.
Putco’s General Manager, Daniel Malherbe says, “We appreciate the swift action taken by the police in apprehending the suspects and will upgrade their security.”
Provincial officials have engaged the bus company’s management to find the way forward.
