#PayTheGrants allies and supporters outside the High Court in Pretoria where the SRD grant case was heard on October 31, 2024.
Advocacy group, #PayTheGrants, says government does have money to pay the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant beneficiaries.
This comes after the High Court in Pretoria ruled that the application criteria to access the SRD grant is unconstitutional.
The judgment focuses on the restrictive criteria for grant eligibility, the challenges that an electronic application platform and the insufficient income threshold pose.
The advocacy group, which brought the application, says that the ruling will benefit vulnerable South Africans, who depend on grants.
#PayTheGrants’ Deputy Chairperson Elizabeth Raiters says, “The government is aware that so many people actually need this grant and South Africa does have the money to pay these beneficiaries. I don’t think that you can introduce a grant and not look at the amount of beneficiaries that need to access this grant.”
“We need to go back to the drawing board with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Social Development, and actually fix all these errors that have been made in this grant. We are actually hopeful that the department does implement all these new regulations that the court has put down, because it will actually help beneficiaries who’ve been struggling for years to access the SRD grant.”
