Judges’ Secretary Andiswa Mengo at the Tribunal
The Judicial Conduct Tribunal (JCT) has concluded hearing the evidence and subsequent cross-examination of Judges’ Secretary Andiswa Mengo.
The fact-finding body chaired by retired Judge President Bernard Ngoepe kicked off two weeks ago to probe the first ever sexual harassment complaint in South Africa’s judiciary.
Mengo filed a January 2023 complaint against Eastern Cape Judge President Selby Mbenenge accusing him of sexual harassment in the form of in-person interaction and electronic communication during the period of June 2021 to November 2022.
Mengo spent the first six days testifying about the claimed sexual harassment she experienced in the form of WhatsApp exchanges and sexual remarks allegedly at the hands of the Judge President.
Mengo then faced tough questions during cross-examination led by Mbenenge’s counsel Advocate Muzi Sikhakhane SC which sought to test her version of events.
The Tribunal, which marked its 10th day, has been adjourned until 5 May 2025.
