Komani’s ongoing water crisis disrupts services, frustrates locals

The inconsistent water supply in parts of Komani, Eastern Cape, has affected the delivery of services. The crisis has been ongoing since November last year leading to frustrations from locals.

The water levels of the dam supplying the area are critically low.

14 wards out of 34 in the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality are facing water outages. This has led to the Chris Hani District Municipality introducing water cuts.

Two residents Posha Lubbe and Elizabeth Meyer claim the water provided by the municipality is contaminated.

“I’m glad we are getting this water, the water is clean and we will drink this water. The water we used to get was a little dirty. It’s so hard to do the washing,” Lubbe says.

“It’s affected everyone. I constantly have stomach cramps. l went to the doctor and apparently, it’s the water we are given,” Meyer laments.

Meanwhile, the MMC for Infrastructure at the Chris Hani District Municipality, Bongeka Nobuntu has refuted claims that the water supplied to residents is contaminated.

“Every two hours in our treatment works we have to make the tests to make sure the water is safe for human consumption. So, that’s what we have been doing even with these allegations we are still saying to the people if there are such come to us we are on the ground the councillors are on the ground so that we can send our teams to test the water immediately but if make the accusations and then disappear we are not going to get to the bottom of it.”
