Judicial Tribunal of Judge Mbenenge continues

1 minute

The Judicial Conduct Tribunal probing sexual harassment allegations against Judge President Selby Mbenenge will continue in Johannesburg today. This marks day six of the tribunal hearing.

This follows after a complaint was lodged by Judges’ Secretary, Andiswa Mengo who accused the top Judge of sexual harassment in January 2023.

Mengo alleges that this took place in the form of in-person interaction and electronic communication.

The sixth day of the hearings will see evidence leader State Advocate Salome Scheepers continue to comb through the WhatsApp messages between the pair.

The fact-finding body has already heard evidence showing a pattern of the top Judge allegedly initiating the texts, and the persistent and unrelenting nature of the texts which did not stop after rejections, as well as highlighting the power dynamics between the pair which compelled Mengo to continue responding.

The hearing will begin at 9:30 am on Tuesday.
