Leadership instability tarnishing AmaZulu monarch’s integrity: Expert

Cultural expert Professor Sihawu Ngubane says the instability in decision-making and failure to install a proper structure of advisory to handle the affairs of AmaZulu King Misuzulu KaZwelithini is tarnishing the integrity of the monarch.

This comes after a series of dramatic events that have unfolded within the royal house.

The king announced today that his traditional wedding to Nomzamo Myeni, set to make her his third wife, has been called off. The wedding was due to take place next Sunday.

The decision faced a legal challenge from his first wife, Queen Ntokozo KaMayisela, who argued that their civil union legally prohibited the king from taking another wife.

Prince Simphiwe Zulu has also been dismissed as the king’s spokesperson.

In December the king fired Reverend Buthelezi as his Prime Minister.

Professor Ngubane elaborates, “The king is a king because of his people so the nation is concerned about the instability that is taking place during these days. Traditionally any king has got his advisor or confidence that he approaches before he goes on public in the absence of a traditional prime minister. They should be the king’s counsels. There’s no counsel, there’s no prime minister. So, it is difficult to decide and discuss the issues unilaterally because what is happening now takes these unilaterally. And I think for the nation to have stability we need to have those structures that would be a surprise support to the majesty.”
