Kimberley man celebrates his birthday by gifting school uniforms

A Kimberley-based man has embarked on a school uniform drive around the city.

Greg Nyongane says every year during his birthday month in January he dedicates his life to making a change within society, putting smiles on learners’ faces.

He says he will be donating a total of 300 school uniforms for this year.

As most people celebrate their birthdays by celebrating themselves,  Nyongane choses to celebrate his life differently, by donating uniforms to school children.

Nyongane says seeing smiles on learners fulfils him.

“I took a conscious thing that I will never again celebrate my birthday but make a difference in the lives of children in the schools, especially grade two’s and three’s as well. The only thing I tell them is that do what I have done to you to the society and that’s how I we believe we can make a difference in society because you don’t see poverty but can see what is happening and that is the reason why I  am doing this today. I am not doing it with anybody’s funds but I take 40 percent from my personal bonus and I set a target for the year.”

Learners at Zingisa Intermediate School received their new uniforms with pride.

School principal Velile Mapete says, “We are really humbled and feel very proud to have this initiative and to have these donations given to the learners because this is one of the things that encourage learners to come to school. Looking forward, being proud and not being bullied by others because they don’t have uniform and not feeling shy as learners but feeling free to associate and learn with other learners. This is also helping the school with our colours and being proud of who we are.”

Nyongane says this initiative will continue throughout the year and stakeholders are welcome to join the drive and make more change.
