The Modjadji Royal Council is gearing up for a legal battle against President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to officially recognise Princess Masalanabo Modjadji as the rightful Queen of the Balobedu nation in December.
The council claims that Ramaphosa’s move was ill-informed and that they were not consulted.
Queen Masalanabo’s coronation is expected to take place in March. However, the council wants the decision to be overturned in favour of Prince Lekukela Modjadji as the rightful heir.
“The 13th of December 2024 will forever be a day of great shock and disappointment. The decision by the President which got circulated that morning was not only unfortunate, but it was ill-informed. We’ve already met our legal team. Within this week, we are likely to be contesting the president’s idea,” says council’s spokesperson Ronnie Moroatshehla.
