Police confident of case against Mpumalanga tavern shooting suspect

The 39-year-old man accused of allegedly killing eight people in Pienaar, Mpumalanga has been remanded in police custody until next week Tuesday for a formal bail application.

The man is alleged to have gunned down six people at a tavern and six others were wounded in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Two of the victims succumbed to wounds while in hospital.

Legal representative Nkosingiphile Maluka says they still need to properly consult with the client and gather more information on the matter.

“We have confidence in our criminal justice system but the accused or client like any other accused has rights which he must also enjoy whenever is accused of any offense we believe that the investigations is going to process and the rest we going to see when applying for bail on Tuesday. Taking to account that it was already late when I met him, he was tired, he wanted to rest so the only manage to get was to confirm his previous convictions since they are always important during first appearance also the issue of having pending cases.”

Meanwhile, Mpumalanga police says they have a strong case against the accused and more arrests are imminent.

Provincial police spokesperson Jabu Ndubane says the suspect made a confession about the shooting incident.

“Yes indeed we have a strong case but investigations is still continuing as you know lot of people have passed on people would have question whether it was one person but the investigation is still going on and he has already made a confession, we are still expecting more arrests, more people must be arrested and the community must come forward to give us more information because we relying on the community.”
