Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has committed to intensify efforts to improve results in 2025. Gauteng province came in third with an 88.4% matric pass rate.
Chiloane says last year’s performance was the best since 1995.
Chiloane and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi have honoured the top achievers with bursaries at a celebratory event in Bryanston.
“To ensure effective teaching and learning, the focus of our strategies in Gauteng are geared toward our learners and the classroom as a unit of change. For effective teaching and learning, we have to ensure that classrooms are fully functional. We must continue to demand accountability for results.”
Lesufi pledges performance bonuses to district directors achieving over 90% in their regions.

Top achievers
Some top achievers from the Gauteng 2024 matric class have expressed mixed emotions. This follows the release of the National Senior Certificate results this morning.
48.8% of candidates have qualified for admission to institutions of higher learning for bachelor’s degree studies.
It is an improvement from 40.9% in 2023, representing the highest number of Bachelor passes in recent history.
Okuhle Goba from the Marlboro Garden Secondary School in Johannesburg has seven distinctions.
“The constant prayers and support I receive from friends and family have kept me going. I discovered my learning and studying styles, and through intentionality, I achieved my academic success. I have a deep interest in engineering, which I hope to study this year.”
Meanwhile, Goba says as many celebrate achieving outstanding results, the reality is that some candidates did not make it.
“I feel like as matriculants, we have faced so much pressure the past year. To make it this far is an amazing achievement on its own. Your value is not limited or determined by the results. There’s always a second chance and another path.”
