The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) has announced its highest pass rate in five years, with 98.47% of candidates successfully completing their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations in 2024.

According to the results released on Monday, 89.37% of students qualified for higher education this year, marking an improvement from last year’s 88.59%.

The examining body says there is a significant increase in the number of candidates, with 16 304 full-time and part-time students taking the examinations at 275 venues, an increase of 1 124 candidates from the previous year.

IEB CEO Confidence Dikgole praises the remarkable resilience of the Class of 2024, who faced unique challenges during their high school years.

“In Grade 8, amidst the severe lockdown of 2020, they encountered disruptions to basic learning, adapted to new forms of education and navigated the psychological impact of uncertainty and isolation,” Dikgole says.

The CEO also highlights the growing influence of technology on education, noting that the Class of 2024 represents “a generation increasingly shaped by technological advances, including the use of generative AI in learning.”

The exam was conducted without any irregularities that could have compromised its credibility, maintaining the IEB’s high standards of assessment integrity.
