City of Joburg housing units
A group of social housing applicants in Fleurhof, Johannesburg, have threatened to occupy low-cost rental apartments owned by the City of Johannesburg amid the housing backlog that has persisted for over three decades.
More than a hundred people gathered at the Fleurhof affordable housing precinct, demanding that the metro allocate social housing to them.
However, the City of Johannesburg clarified that the precinct consists solely of low-cost rental units managed by its subsidiary, the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco).
These applicants say they have attended multiple meetings to follow up on their applications, but their concerns remain unresolved.
“I applied in the year 2000. I have been attending a number of meetings with no luck. I need an RDP, because I don’t have money to rent, I am just a pensioner,” says an aggrieved resident.”
“I applied in the year 96, while I was working. There are young kids, 14 and 15 years here who are owning flats, while I am renting at the age f 70 and I applied a long time ago,” laments another resident.
