Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead at the home of his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in Voslroorus, in Ekurhuleni, in 2014.
The High Court in Pretoria will convene a special sitting in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial on Wednesday for accused number one – Muzi Sibiya – to confirm his new lawyer.
This follows the death of Sibiya’s legal representative, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu in December last year.
Mngomezulu died whilst in hospital.
Sibiya and four others are currently on trial for the 2014 murder of the soccer star, Meyiwa.
During the special sitting, Sibiya is expected to tell the court who he prefers should represent him in the trial.
The accused had indicated he was amenable to having one of the current lawyers in the trial represent him.
Legal analyst Ulrich Roux says if Sibiya chooses one of the other defence lawyers, there cannot be a conflict of interest.
“In this instance, it makes sense for him to brief one of the other attorneys who is on record for one of the other accused given that they would be familiar with everything that has happened and so far placed on record and all the evidence that has been led and that will hopefully not cause any further delays in the matter. The further difficulty with that is of course there can be no conflict of interest so if his version differs from the accused person whose legal representative he decides to appoint then that can cause some difficulty,” explains Roux.
