Eighteen people have died, and a baby has been seriously injured in a collision on the N3 at Van Reenen Pass involving a truck, taxi, and car on Monday.
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya confirmed that additional people were trapped in the wreckage.
The driver of the truck allegedly fled the scene.
The N3 Toll Concession company reported that the pass was closed to allow emergency services to respond.
According to the company, heavy mist and dangerous weather conditions contributed to the crash.
Traffic was severely backed up, with vehicles halted between the Pyramids Motel and Van Reenen town.
