Limpopo’s health department says the problem of malfunctioning ablution facilities at Kgapane Hospital outside Tzaneen is being addressed.

This comes after a video went viral on social media showing the deplorable state of the toilet in the hospital’s outpatient department (OPD)

The toilets look filthy and not flushed due to lack of water.

Department spokesperson Neil Shikwambana has acknowledged that the toilets were not flushing due to blockages and lack of water.

However, Shikwambana urges members of the public with concerns to contact the health authorities.

“Some of the infrastructure in the hospital is indeed in an imperfect condition. Because some of the buildings are actually old. Having said that, we want to indicate that we are open to all sorts of criticism. Because that helps us to correct and improve. However, we condemn this tendency of people coming to the hospital first, doctoring, and manipulating scenes, motivated by the need to take videos that will trend. We believe that it is malicious, and it does not in any way assist us to move forward. It does not portray or correlate with the situation on the ground; that’s why we say we condemn that kind of behaviour.”

Furthermore, Shikwambana says that the department is working closely with water authorities to resolve water challenges at the Kgapane hospital.

“Move over the issue with a shortage of water In some of the toilet systems, we need to indicate that we are working hard with the water service authority to correct and resolve the illegal connections and the perforation of the main line to the hospital by community members. That is a long-standing issue. Because that is the challenge that results in low pressure of water in the hospital and sometimes actually dire shortages of water in that facility.”
