The St George’s Beach in Gqeberha’s infrastructure is in a dilapidated condition with beachgoers fearing for their lives and the safety of their children.
The infrastructure is old and rusted, with some areas close to the public. The residents feel that this beach has been abandoned by the municipality, as there has been no revamp or fixing of the structures in years.
They say the municipality needs to bring it back to its former glory.
“It is unsafe here. Children have gone missing because now they have to swim at the beach because they cannot access the swimming pool. This has been going on for a long time. I would like to see the municipality take action and ensure that our safety is not compromised,” says one of the residents.
“As young people and young women we are unsafe. I grew up here. We used to come here with my family, but it is no longer the same. It’s a great sadness. There is nothing that can be done if someone gets injured at the beach. We are also scared as women to relieve ourselves in the bushes as we do not know what might happen over there. Our siblings are missing,” says another resident.
The municipality says they will ensure that they kickstart the revamping process in the next financial year.
“In terms of revamping or renovating the infrastructure, yes, we are busy with the process and are in the final stages of the supply chain. We are actually waiting for a service provider to be appointed,” says a representative from the municipality.
