A mother receives a gift after giving birth in hospital.
The Chief Operations Officer of the Dora Nginza Hospital in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape Dr Zukiso Nxiweni has expressed concern over staff shortages.
This is as the provincial Health MEC handed gifts to new mothers who gave birth on New Year’s Day.
Nxiweni says he has hopes that the MEC’s visit will shine a light on the matter.
He says they are in need of a district hospital in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, as they are faced with an influx of patients.
“I think the issues of Dora are that it is a regional hospital but there are many services like maternity, paeds, your burns unit and also the psychiatric ward where now you find that Dora is no longer doing regional services only. The impact of not having a district hospital here is that everything comes to Dora.”
Meanwhile, five-time Dora Nginza maternity ward patient Nokuthula Magwada says she is grateful for MEC’s visit.
“I’m feeling so happy for MEC to come and gift me, I thank her and the hospital nurses and the hospital also.”
