The case against a 28-year-old Limpopo man who allegedly impregnated a 13-year-old girl has been postponed to January 8, 2025.

He appeared before the Seshego Magistrate’s Court outside Polokwane this morning and has been charged with statutory rape.

The girl is among 31 teenagers who delivered babies on Christmas Day in Limpopo.

Meanwhile, Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba says health professionals who fail to report statutory rape cases can be criminally charged.

Ramathuba accuses public servants who don’t report statutory rape of being complicit in the abuse of children.

“All of us have got that responsibility to report any criminal acts, especially sexual offences. When you know about them and you don’t report, you can be criminally charged. Health professionals are not exempted in terms of them – firstly as the citizens of this country. If a minor seeks termination of pregnancy, that is evidence enough that an act of criminality occurred.”
