Firefighters in the Garden Route region of the Western Cape are continuing to bring a wildfire in the Little Karoo under control.

Last week, 10 active wildfires raged in the region and most have been contained, including one in Jongensfontein in the Hessequa Municipality.

The fire in the Swartberg Pass near Oudtshoorn continues to burn in inaccessible mountainous areas.

Authorities say infrastructure remains safe under the current conditions.

Meanwhile, fire fighting organisation, Working on Fire, says the past winter fire season in the Western Cape has been the most devastating in nine years.

Fires have claimed 34 lives thus far.

The organisation says the intensity of the season was been driven by the growing impacts of climate change, resulting in more frequent and severe wildfires.

It further adds that there is an urgent need for climate action.

Working on Fire says they are constantly working on promoting fire awareness education and implementing integrated fire management strategies to reduce fire risks.
