Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko has welcomed 12 babies born on Christmas Day at the Tembisa Hospital, east of Johannesburg.
She presented the babies’ mothers with gifts.
Nkomo-Ralehoko has encouraged the mothers of these babies to breastfeed them and attend regular immunization appointments at their local clinics.
The MEC says the mothers were also presented with the birth certificates for their newborns at the hospital.
“The Department of Home Affairs is giving them the birth certificates to ensure that we account for each and every citizen even if it’s one day old. All the things are here, are done here, the offices are here. They are not going to go to the clinic or the hospital and after a year it’s the only time they get the birth certificate like it used to happen before,” she says.
