Just under 200 motorists have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on Limpopo roads since the beginning of December.
Limpopo Transport spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene says the arrests are higher than those recorded during other months in the year.
Chuene says that traffic officers will be setting up roadblocks throughout the province to ensure that the read-out regulations are adhered to.
“We have already arrested 181 motorists for drunk driving since the beginning of December. As a department, we are taking a zero-tolerance approach to drinking and driving with increased visibility on the roads with regular roadblocks and arrests for those driving under the influence.”
Appeal for road safety
The Department of Mobility in the Western Cape has made a renewed appeal to the public to be responsible on the roads this festive season.
Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku says that the province has recorded 11 fatalities between the 17th and the 22nd of December. He says that 9 of the deceased are pedestrians.
Sileku says that over a hundred drivers have been arrested in the Western Cape for driving under the influence. He says that everyone must act together to make our roads safe.
“Every life lost is a painful reminder of our need to change road behaviours. These are not just statistics; they represent families shattered by preventable tragedies. We must act now to save lives.”
