Hawks lay additional charges against Mabopane cop killers

The Hawk’s Serious Organised Crime Investigation has charged two men with the murder of their accomplice and a police officer. Joseph Mjozi Makhubele and Bongani Wilson Mabena appeared in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate Court for the October 2022 murder of the police officer. And now they face additional charges for killing their accomplice, who died at the crime scene.

The off-duty police officer and his girlfriend were ambushed by three armed men as they arrived home in Mabopane in Pretoria.

During the standoff, the officer drew his service weapon and engaged in a shootout with the suspects resulting in one of the suspects being shot in the process.

The police officer was also fatally shot. Makhubele and Mabena were also charged with robbery and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The case has been postponed until next year, January 16 for a High Court date and court case number.
