FEDSAS ready to implement BELA Act

The Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools (FEDSAS) says it is ready to implement the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act in its entirety, despite being unhappy with some aspects.

On Friday, President Cyril Ramaphosa authorised the full implementation of the Act, following a suspension of two contentious clauses, relating to admissions and language policy in schools.

Deputy CEO of the Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools, Riaan van der Bergh, “We are ready to work in the sector and apply the Act. We’re very comforted by the media conference, and the content of it, which the Minister of Basic Education held on Saturday afternoon, stating how she will be navigating the way forward. Even though we can’t say that we’re happy with everything in the BELA Bill, we need to look to quality education for all learners in the country and we need to have a framework with which we can work in and ensure that we elevate the quality of schools for all the learners in the country.”
