Correctional Services Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale says 143 correctional service officials have been dismissed in this financial year for a range of offences.
Thobakgale says they many still have pending cases.
“We end up dismissing a lot of our officials so as much as we have a decrease in the offender population, we are now starting to have a decrease in the numbers of our officials cause of such, in this financial year, already its 143 and there are cases that are still going.”
Thobakgale led a raid at the New Prison in Pietermaritzburg. Among the items that were confiscated includes money, cellphones and other electronic paraphernalia.
