Sign showing a pedestrian crossing
Pedestrians are urged to play their part by observing the rules of the road. This is as traffic begins to peak on all major routes as people head to various destinations for the holidays.
According to the Department of Transport a total of 98 pedestrians were arrested for crossing roads where it is not safe do to so.
Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane has urged road users to utilise public roads responsibly.
“The problem is the situation where you have pedestrians wanting to cross freeways, hitchhikers on our freeways which is not acceptable at all. Another serious problem is alcohol abuse from pedestrians. They go to places of leisure and the next moment they want to cross the road when it’s unsafe to do so and that’s why we have deployed a large number of law enforcement officials.”
