Heavy traffic flows are expected on the following major routes as holidaymakers will be travelling in and out of Gauteng.
Heavy traffic is expected on major roads as travellers head to various destinations for the Christmas holidays, with many companies closing for the festive period.
Deputy Transport Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa and Acting Gauteng Premier Lebogang Maile will be at the Grasmere Toll Plaza in southern Johannesburg this morning to interact with road users and conduct vehicle fitness inspections.
Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane says, “Motorists are advised to overtake only when it is safe and always comply with traffic rules. Passengers: Avoid carrying large luggage that may overload public transport vehicles. Pedestrians: Do not cross freeways, as it is illegal and extremely dangerous. Motorcyclists: Ride within prescribed speed limits and remain cautious. Cyclists: Always wear helmets and avoid cycling at night due to poor visibility.”
Traffic Update | Holiday Traffic Volumes
The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) has reported high traffic volumes between Johannesburg and Durban, with an increase expected over the weekend.
Dhoogra says, “In addition to increased traffic recorded on the route, a number of serious vehicle crashes have been attended to by members of the road incident management system. Alarmingly more than 80 percent of these crashes are likely to have been caused due to human errors.”
“Reckless driver behaviour, distraction and poor decision-making can have a long-lasting impact on human lives. Despite the efforts of N3TC and its law enforcement partners, lawlessness appears to be still rampant on the roads,” adds Dhoogra.
Dhoogra also noted that checks for vehicle roadworthiness and driving under the influence of alcohol would be conducted along the route, emphasizing the need for compliance with road safety measures.
Authorities urge all road users to prioritize safety as traffic volumes increase during the festive season.
