The Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) has offered assurances on the state of readiness for the festive travel season after operational challenges led to delays last weekend.
Passengers experienced delays at passport control processing points due to a system failure. This incident was preceded by flight delays and cancellations due to issues with the fuel bypass line earlier this month.
Addressing the media at OR Tambo International Airport, alongside the Border Management Authority (BMA), ACSA CEO Mpumi Mpofu said while the incidents were regrettable, they did not suggest a lack of preparation on their part.
“But the reason we are seeing indicators of problems is because between 2019 and April 2024, effectively, we were not able to implement projects and that’s the primary reason everything came to a halt.”
