Traffic build up
The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) company says there are high volumes of traffic between Johannesburg and Durban, with the number of vehicles expected to increase further over the coming weekend.
N3TC Chief Operating Officer Thania Dhoogra has called on motorists to drive safely and help to bring the number of road crashes down.
She says there will be checks for vehicle roadworthiness and driving under the influence of alcohol all along the route.
“In addition to increased traffic recorded on the route, a number of serious vehicle crashes have been attended to by members of the road incident management system. Alarmingly, more than 80 percent of these crashes are likely to have been caused due to human error. Reckless driver behaviour, distraction and poor decision making can have long-lasting impact on human lives. Despite the efforts of N3TC and its law enforcement partners, lawlessness appears to be still rampant on the roads.”
Meanwhile, Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy and Deputy Mkhuleko Hlengwa briefed the media at Touws River in the Western Cape on the mid-Festive Season preliminary road safety report.
The report focused on the Festive Season Road Safety campaign and initiatives and plans that seek to reduce fatalities.
