DA questions timing of water maintenance in Johannesburg

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Johannesburg has expressed frustration at the water woes plaguing various areas in the city. This, as taps in some places are still running dry, following an 86-hour maintenance programme by bulk water supplier Rand Water, which ended on Monday evening.

DA’s Ward 99 Councillor and Shadow MMC for water and power in the City of Johannesburg, Nicole van Dyk says that a lack of alternative water sources for residents was concerning.

“We’ve had multiple water issues in this particular ward, and the surrounding wards since March. No one would ever say no to maintenance, but the timing was questionable. Even if it was decided many months ago, the concern is when did Jo’burg Water find out, and how long did they actually have to prepare their systems? The biggest failure that came out of this weekend was a severe lack of alternative water supplies. When you’ve got Eikenhof that feeds 70 percent of the City, so that’s close to four million residents and hundreds of suburbs that were going to remain dry.”
