Five accused drug lords appearing in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo.
Police in Limpopo say they are determined to break drug syndicates in the province. Some community members have expressed concern about the escalating crime across the province.
The Hawks busted what has been reported to be Africa’s largest illicit drugs manufacturing laboratory in Groblersdal in July this year.
Drugs and manufacturing equipment estimated at over two billion rand were seized.
Five accused, including three Mexican nationals, are on trial.
Provincial Police Commissioner General Jan Scheepers says, “You can see that we are really making breakthroughs and that is with the help from communities. We cannot do this on our own, so the majority of these arrests by our detectives, our tactical support teams, our crime intelligence, all the units work together.”
He adds: “It’s a mixed group, some of them are foreign nationals. I think in one case in Groblersdal, you will remember that there were three Mexicans. So, it’s mixed, it’s South Africans but it’s also people from other countries. Some of them are legally in the country, some are illegal in the country.” – Reporting by Avhapfani Munyai.
