Motorists, pedestrians urged to be exercise caution on the roads

The Gauteng Traffic Police is urging motorists to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant when driving, especially when approaching pedestrians. This warning comes after two pedestrians were killed after being struck by vehicles on the N1 freeway near Grasmere in Johannesburg within a one-hour period.

Traffic Police Spokesperson Sello Maremane emphasised the importance of road safety, particularly in areas with high pedestrian activity.

He appealed to drivers to adhere to the rules of the road, avoid reckless behaviour, and prioritize the safety of others, especially vulnerable pedestrians.

“Pedestrians are urged not to loiter around on freeways as this is illegal and unsafe. Pedestrians are advised to cross roads at controlled intersection such as a stop sign or robots. Gauteng traffic police will continue to monitor freeways closely to ensure that our pedestrians are safe,” says Maremane.

Meanwhile, the number of fatalities in the in the collision on the N9 road outside Graaf Reinet has now risen to 15. It is alleged that an SUV traveling from Middelburg, and a quantum headed to the opposite direction collided head on in the early hours of today.

The cause of the accident remains unknown at this stage, but the transport department has confirmed an investigation has ensued.
