Deadline for registration of spaza shops on Tuesday

Owners of food outlets including tuck shops which are also called spaza shops have a day in which to register their businesses of face closure.

President Cyril Ramaphosa gave them 21 hours in which register with their local authorities after the death of a number of children around the country in suspected food poisoning incidents.

The deadline is  5pm on Tuesday.

Acting Gauteng Premier, Lebogang Maile Maile says 85 registration centres have been set up and over 13 000 applications have been collected across the province.

He briefed the media in Johannesburg on Sunday.

“This is an application process and the determination will be made for those who qualify. Some of the issues that came up, people who submitted incomplete documents, people who were fronting for foreign nationals and people who did not have floor plans for their businesses.”
