The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in the Western Cape will launch its road safety campaign in Philippi today ahead of the festive season.

Regional Chairperson Mandla Hermanus says they will be conducting vehicle inspections at the Joe Gqabi long distance interchange.

He says the campaign, under the theme Your safety, Our Priority, is to among others promote safer driving practices and reduce road crashes during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

He says there will be increased inspections to ensure taxis are roadworthy and meet safety standards.

The Western Cape government also launched its road safety campaign last month, with a sharp focus on tackling drunk drivers and speedsters.

Traffic officials will be out in full force this festive season and other law enforcement agencies will be supporting them on the roads.

Roadblocks will be conducted at hotspot areas to prevent driver fatigue and check for unroadworthy vehicles.
