The Department of Education in Limpopo is appealing to parents to support learners who did not pass their end of year examinations.

The department says two boys from Vhembe District committed suicide after failing grade ten this week.

The two were learners at Mphaphuli and Thohoyandou Technical High Schools respectively.

MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya says they will send psychological teams to help the families and learners at the schools.

“Our deepest condolences to the families of our children who have passed on. No one expected this and on behalf of the Department of Education, we are also shocked but this has given us a reason now to be able to plead with the families and the parents to say let’s get closer to our children (and) our learners so that we give them emotional support when they face this type of situation. Our team for psycho-social support will get closer to the families and will also get closer to the learners when these schools reopen.”

Grade 12 learner commits suicide after alleged bullying by teachers

In an incident that happened in October, twenty-year-old Joseph Maimela reportedly took his own life after incidents of alleged bullying at Kgabo Secondary School.

The learner left a suicide note in which he detailed the alleged abusive treatment perpetrated by some teachers at the school.

His fellow learners believe a bullying incident involving his report card being published to the entire school may have contributed to the suicide.
