Lebombo Border Post closed
Truck drivers who have been stranded on the N4 toll road towards the Lebombo Border post in Komatipoort for several days, are urgently requesting to be allowed to go and offload their trucks.
The border remains closed to cargo trucks due to ongoing post-election protests in Mozambique.
This morning, a delegation of truck drivers travelled to Mozambique to plead with the protest leaders to cross. This follows reports that the protesters are stopping and using the trucks to block the roads that side.
Elaborate on what transpired during the meeting, some truck drivers say the protest leaders would not allow the truck to cross the border.
“They are saying they are not going to allow tanker and chrome drivers because they saying they are supporting the Frelimo party. So, those trucks are not going to cross until the 15th for January. We just wanted to offload and come back home and the Mozambicans, they must just come to South Africa. That’s something that we wanted but they said, no,” says one of the drivers.
“We are concerned about us drivers. We are always stuck here. I have been here since from Sunday and we were expecting that by the end of the day we will be able to move today, but nothing happened. So, now the problem is that we don’t have food, we don’t have toilets there. We are parked, we are in the line which is stretching up to about 5 km from where we are,” says another struck truck driver.
