Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu has acknowledged the existence of a high crime rate and reiterated the commitment of the Ministry and the South African Police Service to overcome it.

Mchunu was speaking in Siyabuswa, Mpumalanga, on Wednesday, where he met with municipal officials and traditional leaders in the area to discuss crime, particularly the issue of stock theft.

Mchunu says while some progress has been made in recovering stolen livestock, more needs to be done to improve the perception that the SAPS is weak in handling stock theft cases.

“We have to meet so that when we meet again, we have a proper record of this issue. They did tell us that the crime that is here, the types of crimes that are here, we know that there are murders here, we know that there are GBV cases here, there are stock theft cases, there is cash in transit cases. Our conclusion about that is that the councilors feel there is a crime, and it needs to be tackled.”
