The Sabie Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga has postponed the cases of 52 alleged illegal miners brought to the surface at a local disused mine last week.

The foreign nationals from Mozambique, Lesotho and Zimbabwe appeared in court briefly on Wednesday on a charge of contravening the Immigration Act.

They are part of the 153 illegal miners retrieved from the 180-metre mine shaft. They appeared in groups due to the size of the court.

The cases were postponed to 17 December for those who require Shona interpretation and the rest will return on 23 December.

Speaking during proceedings in court, Magistrate Gerald Gunguluza says, “For the respective Shona speaking requiring the Shona language practitioner, so therefore, everybody will be postponed to the 17th of December for that purpose. All in custody no bail. 23rd December for assessment, Mr Garisto, custody, no bail.”
