RAF cautions against claimants throwing themselves at moving cars

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) says that a disturbing trend has come to light of some individuals intentionally getting themselves hit by moving vehicles in a bid to claim compensation.

The fund has issued a stern warning that it will not pay out claims for such incidents.

This after receiving numerous calls from drivers claiming to be victims of this trend.

RAF National Spokesperson, Mcintosh Polela says, “Increasingly, we are receiving calls from drivers, saying that they have observed that people are standing in front of cars or standing on the side of the road and waiting for cars to stop or to slow down just enough so that people do not get killed if they make contact with the car. We started by seeing videos, which we thought were spoofs or were just something for content; and then we increasingly got drivers who were concerned about their safety, about the fact that they were going to be found liable.”

In a statement issued yesterday, the RAF says it does not compensate someone who intentionally causes a motor vehicle accident, even if this results in serious injuries.

The fund further says in the event of death, those who are the authors of their own misfortune will not be compensated.
