Six cash-in-transit heist suspects have been arrested and four injured following a shootout with police on the M17 Near Kwazakhele in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.
Hawks Spokesperson Avele Fumba says the heavily armed suspects allegedly ambushed an armoured cash transport vehicle and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
He says police were called to the scene and a high-speed chase and shootout ensued.
Fumba says, “During the suspects’ escape, a high-speed chase and exchange of gunfire ensued. Then the suspects abandoned one vehicle at the scene and apparently hijacked another vehicle with a two-year-old child inside.”
“Due to the swift response of the police, the child and the female victim were rescued unharmed within 200 metres and six suspects were apprehended, all still alive but injured. Several firearms including high-caliber rifles and pistols were recovered alongside ammunition. We therefore urge anyone with information to come forward.”
