The Garden Route District Municipality in the Western Cape says it’s ready for any possible wildfires in the area.
Alien invasive species and fynbos are some of the catalysts of wildfires in the province.
This and issues of climate change come under the spotlight at a National Fire Indaba in George.
Senior fire officials and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa are among those who attending the Indaba.
The municipality’s Fire Chief Deon Stoffels explains their state of preparedness.
“We know our area is infested with alien vegetation which is a fire fuel of course. We have just dispatched a helicopter to a fire in Hessequa. This is the start. The predictions in terms of weather are not good, especially leading to the months of January, February and March.”
“So, we are on a high alert and also ready for the summer season with our necessary protocols put in place,” he says.
