South Africa has committed to a global initiative aimed at reducing traffic-related deaths by 50% by 2030.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that road crashes claim over 1.19 million lives globally each year, with 20 to 50 million more people sustaining non-fatal injuries, many resulting in long-term disabilities.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) announced that South Africa will implement strategies aligned with the global effort to curb fatalities on the country’s roads.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane explains the alignment with international goals, stating, “This call is a goal that is set by the World Health Organization, and all countries in the world are striving to achieve this. In South Africa, we have localized it, domesticated it. The target is in the National Development Plan and the road safety strategy – and that is because we are part of the global world.”
The strategies will focus on improving road safety and reducing the number of lives lost in traffic accidents, says the road agency.
