I.T. security experts are cautioning parents to monitor their children’s social media activity as online dangers such as pornographic extortion and other explicit crimes are on the rise.
According to a child survey by digital awareness brand “Be In Touch,” 83% have a social media account by the time they are 12.
Furthermore, 77% have no parental controls or filters enabled. About 67% claim to have been cyber bullied or contacted by a stranger.

Anna Collard from digital security company “Know Be 4 Africa” says youth employment scams are also on the rise.
“A lot of them use their devices at night, like 65% of them use their device at night – which is one of the most damaging things to do, actually, particularly for adolescents because they haven’t bought the capacity yet, to deal with the sort of emotional triggering and manipulation that comes with these platforms and those algorithms.”
